EMDR Therapy
What is trauma?
The word trauma originates from Greek origin meaning “wound”. Many people have endured “wounds” at various times throughout their lives, but we don’t often think of it as trauma. Trauma comes in all forms, and is anything that has left you feeling distress or discomfort. Trauma may leave us feeling uncertain, scared, alone, anxious, depressed, irritable, disconnected or can manifest itself in other ways as well. It may feel like our lives are forever changed, or that we are just not who we used to be.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing and is a therapy used to target trauma and reduce its symptoms. It is an extensively researched and effective method to help people recover from the distressing symptoms of trauma and other life experiences. It is believed that trauma and other negative life experiences can lead people to form negative beliefs about themselves.
The goal of EMDR is to go from believing a negative belief, to believing a positive belief about oneself instead. This is accomplished with the use of bilateral stimulation while noticing the negative belief as well as emotions, body sensations, and images attached to the traumatic event/memory. Many people report having a new perspective on life as a result of their time in EMDR therapy. If you are interested in knowing more about EMDR, please check out my blog.
